Have you just welcomed a new pet into your family or is your well-established senior pet doing something new and strange, perhaps destructive? Paumanok Veterinary Hospital, P.C. is ready to help you understand and, if needed, correct the behavior. If your pet has started a new BAD behavior, such as becoming aggressive or eliminating in inappropriate places, we will give you suggestions about how to change it.
First, we would need to rule out physical problems. If this is considered unlikely, we can help you figure out what is going on in your pet’s mind — or at least develop strategies to deal with the behavior. No one technique works all the time, but we are patient and understanding. Sometimes compromises between human and animal have to be worked out. We’ll keep at it with you until a satisfactory solution is found, and, if necessary, we can refer you to a board-certified behavior specialist.
Pet Selection Advice
A good start is always helpful. Paumanok will guide future owners contemplating a new pet with this important decision to match the right pet with the right person or family. We can advise you on what breed of dog meshes with your lifestyle or whether an independent cat or a pocket pet such as a guinea pig might be the right pet for you. We can even give you the pros and cons on birds as well.
Puppy Obedience Training
Every puppy can benefit from “Puppy Kindergarten” and training. At around the age of 2 to 3 months, this type of training provides excellent guidance in how to help your puppy with:
- Socialization and becoming acquainted with other dogs
- Understanding his or her role in your family
- Preventing behavior problems before they start
Beginners’ Dog Obedience
This class is for 8 weeks and is appropriate for dogs 6 months of age and older. You’ll learn how to train your dog to have good manners in the house. Imagine your dog running across a busy street. This class will teach your dog to obey you even if distracted.
Intermediate Dog Obedience
You will review basic commands, working more to control distractions and prepare for off-leash training. Dog games played in class include:
- Musical hoops
- Kibble race
- Biscuit balance
All dogs and puppies must be up to date on vaccinations appropriate to their age. These classes are fun for you and your pet and go a long way toward establishing a rapport and bond that will stay strong for many years to come.
