Spay/Neuter Procedure
We strongly recommend spaying or neutering all dogs and cats to help reduce unwanted behaviors, sexual instincts, and the risk of infection and disease. This procedure is generally performed between 6-9 months of age, with each pet's individual needs carefully considered. Our veterinarians are highly trained in performing spay and neuter surgeries, ensuring your pet is safe, comfortable, and closely monitored throughout the procedure and recovery.
Neutering involves the removal of the testicles, helping to reduce aggressive behavior, prevent the urge to roam, and lower the risk of testicular cancer and prostate disease. Before the surgery, we perform a physical exam and blood tests to ensure your pet’s safety under anesthesia. Recovery is typically uncomplicated with minimal aftercare.
Spaying involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus, eliminating heat cycles and the possibility of pregnancy. This procedure is also performed between 6-9 months of age. In addition to preventing heat and pregnancy, spaying eliminates the risk of uterine infections and ovarian/uterine tumors, and can reduce the risk of malignant breast cancer by up to 90% when done before the first heat cycle. We will conduct a thorough physical exam and pre-operative lab work to ensure your pet’s safety during surgery and anesthesia. Recovery is usually smooth and uneventful.
Tumors & Growths
Orthopedic Surgery
Paumanok Veterinary Hospital has access to in-house orthopedic specialists who perform surgeries to repair fractures, dislocations, cruciate ligament tears (ACL), and luxating patellas. Our orthopedic specialists also offer guidance when discussing conditions that may not be fully reversible, providing alternative options to improve comfort, mobility, and quality of life. Congenital diseases and acquired injuries to the bones, joints, and spine require more than just basic care. Symptoms of common and severe bone or joint issues include lameness, lethargy, withdrawal, difficulty jumping or climbing short distances, aggression, and irritability. Often, the only visible sign of pain or injury may be a change in your pet’s behavior.
We are skilled in using the latest bone plating, pinning, and fixation techniques to treat our patients. Paumanok Veterinary Hospital is equipped to perform orthopedic surgeries, including fracture and dislocation repairs, laceration repairs, cruciate ligament tear treatments, and luxating patella surgeries. In cases of severe, irreversible damage, we can perform partial or complete limb amputations.
All surgical and treatment options will be thoroughly discussed with you, including their advantages and disadvantages, to help you make the most informed decision for your pet’s health.
