Veterinary Care That Puts Your Pet at Ease

A trip to the vet doesn't have to be a stressful experience — for your pet or for you. At Paumanok Veterinary Hospital, we are deeply committed to making every visit as calm, comfortable, and positive as possible. Through Fear-Free certified training, thoughtful exam room design, and proven low-stress handling techniques, our team works hard to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS) in every patient we see.

We serve dogs and cats throughout Patchogue, Holbrook, Ronkonkoma, Medford, Bellport, and the surrounding Long Island communities — and we believe that compassionate care begins the moment your pet walks through our door.

Low-Stress Handling: A Gentler Approach to Veterinary Medicine

Low-stress handling is a science-based approach to veterinary care that prioritizes the emotional and physical wellbeing of your pet during exams, procedures, and treatments. Rather than using force or restraint to manage a nervous animal, low-stress handling uses gentle techniques, calming body language, and careful positioning to keep pets feeling safe.

When animals feel safe, they cooperate more readily — which means better exams, more accurate diagnoses, and a healthier relationship between your pet and their veterinary team. It also means that future visits are less likely to trigger fear or avoidance behavior, protecting your pet's long-term wellbeing.

At Paumanok Veterinary Hospital, low-stress handling is not an add-on — it is the standard of care we hold ourselves to every single day.

Our Team is Trained to Put Pets First

We are proud to have multiple Fear-Free Certified professionals on our team. Fear-Free certification is a rigorous, evidence-based training program developed by leading veterinary behaviorists and industry experts. It equips veterinary professionals with the knowledge and tools to recognize signs of stress in animals and respond with techniques that reduce anxiety and build trust.

Fear-Free certified team members are trained to:

  • Recognize early signs of fear, anxiety, and stress in dogs and cats
  • Adjust handling techniques in real time based on each individual patient's needs
  • Use calming body language, movement, and voice tone during exams
  • Incorporate positive reinforcement, treats, and patient pacing into every appointment
  • Minimize unnecessary restraint and prioritize patient comfort throughout all procedures
When you bring your pet to Paumanok, you can feel confident knowing that the people caring for your animal have made a meaningful commitment to their emotional wellbeing — not just their physical health.

Tell Us About Your Pet — Before and During Your Visit

No one knows your pet better than you do. We encourage all pet owners to communicate openly with our team about any anxiety, behavioral concerns, or past stressful veterinary experiences — both when scheduling your appointment and again when you arrive.

When booking your appointment, please notify our reception team if your pet:

  • Has a history of fear or anxiety at the vet
  • Becomes reactive or difficult to handle during exams
  • Has had a previous negative experience at a veterinary office
  • Is easily overstimulated by other animals or unfamiliar environments
  • Has any known behavioral sensitivities we should be aware of

When you arrive, remind our staff of any concerns so that we can adjust our approach from the very beginning of your visit. This information helps us choose the right handling techniques, room setup, and pacing before your pet even meets our veterinarian.

We also do our best to minimize wait times in common areas and can accommodate pets who are more comfortable moving directly to an exam room upon arrival. Just let our reception team know when you schedule your appointment — we want to make sure your pet's experience starts on the right foot.

Pre-Visit Anxiety Medication

For some pets, even the most thoughtful low-stress environment is not enough to fully manage their anxiety. If your dog or cat experiences significant fear or distress during veterinary visits, our doctors may recommend a pre-visit anti-anxiety medication to help take the edge off before the appointment begins. These medications are safe, well-tolerated, and can make a dramatic difference in your pet's experience — and yours.

If you believe your pet may benefit from pre-visit medication, mention it when you book your appointment or bring it up during your next visit. Our veterinarians are happy to consult with you about your pet's individual needs and discuss whether this option is right for them.
